Making this easy foaming hand soap recipe with essential oils is going to replace all your store-bought hand soap. It’s the perfect natural soap recipe that is gentle on the skin, moisturizing, a great way to save money, and lasts a long time. It’s going to become your family members, friends, and guests’ new favorite hand soap!
Natural Ingredients
Unscented Castile Soap
Castile soap is a great simple ingredient soap base for lots of diy’s with essential oils. When using liquid castile soap, you need less soap since it’s highly concentrated and you need to add water to it. When making this natural hand soap recipe, I like using the unscented castile soap so you get to customize the scent with essential oils of your choice, but you can also find naturally scented castile soap as well.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba is one of my favorite carrier oils when making homemade recipes. It’s great for moisturizing the skin, and full of essential vitamins and minerals that the skin needs. Jojoba oil not only moisturizes, but it also doesn’t clog pores and soothes dry skin or sensitive skin. It will help to leave your hands feeling better than before!
A great alternative for jojoba oil in this recipe is sweet almond oil, as it’s soothing and nourishing to the skin. You could also use avocado oil, olive oil, or fractionated coconut oil if you have those on hand.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel is soothing, refreshing, and gentle enough for even the tenderness of the skin. While being known to moisturize and soothe sunburns, it can also be used in DIY skincare products since it has so many benefits for the skin. Just make sure to look for an aloe vera gel that contains simple ingredients and is free of dyes.
Water
The best option is to use distilled water since it has all impurities removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are the perfect way to add as much scent as you want to your own hand soap. The possibilities are truly unlimited when it comes to which essential oils to use. Some of my favorite essential oils and essential oil blends are included throughout this blog post so you can choose the one(s) you enjoy! If you want an unscented version, then leave out the essential oils.
Supplies Needed for DIY Hand Soap
- 1/4 cup Dr. Bronner’s castile soap (unscented)
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon aloe vera
- 1 1/2 cups of water
- 20-30 drops of essential oils
- Foaming Hand Soap Dispenser
- Glass Measuring Cup
- Tablespoon
- Spoon or Whisk
Foaming Hand Soap Recipe
The simple steps below will walk you through how to make your own homemade foaming hand soap with essential oils. I love using this simple recipe instead of buying traditional hand soap so that I can avoid any toxic ingredients. The best part is that this recipe avoids artificial fragrances, which tend to flare up my sensitive skin causing redness, cracking, and dry skin.
This recipe is for a 13 oz. glass foaming hand soap bottle, but you can adjust the recipe for the size of the foaming soap dispenser you have.
Note that if you are using boiled water, then you will want to do that first so it can start to cool right away. You can boil your 1 1/2 cups of water on the stovetop or microwave the water in a glass measuring cup. In order for the boiled water to cool faster, place it in the fridge or freezer while measuring out the other ingredients.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
- Measure out 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Add them to the distilled water or boiled and cooled water in the glass measuring cup and mix well with a spoon or whisk. I do recommend using slightly warm water to help the aloe vera mix more easily.
- Next, add the 1/4 cup of Dr. Bronner’s castile unscented soap to the mixture and stir.
- Add the 20-30 drops of your own essential oils to the mixture and stir again. Pick your favorite essential oil blend or choose from several seasonal options below.
- Carefully pour the mixture into your foaming dispenser.
- Add on the top of your dispenser and tight lid securely. Place it in your bathroom or by your kitchen sink!

Storing Your Foaming Hand Soap with Essential Oils
It’s best to store (and use) your homemade foaming hand soap in the glass soap dispenser. Plus, it’s always a good idea to use glass containers when using essential oils in your recipes. This homemade version will last for a couple of weeks up to 4 months, as this is a natural recipe without any preservatives.
Since it doesn’t last too long, I would recommend making this recipe when you need and not too much in advance. All of this usually works out great for me, since I like to change out the scent for the next season right when I need to make more foaming hand soap!
