There are lots of benefits to washing face with clay. Here are some of the reasons to start adding a clay face wash to your natural skin care routine :

natural ingredients

bentonite clay

Bentonite clay is amazing for detoxifying skin and give it a deep pore cleanse. There are so many benefits to using clay as it leaves your face relaxed and reinvigorated. Bentonite clay can be used in many different diy’s with essential oils.

If you are looking for more ways to use bentonite clay, then make this Sweet Almond Bentonite Clay Face Mask recipe! It stays on the skin for a longer amount of time, which gives you even more of those clay benefits of skin.

goats milk melt and pour soap base

Using a goats milk melt and pour soap base is going to give you incredible results. Goats milk soap is know to the a gentle cleanser and having a good amount of vitamin A (anti aging properties) and selenium (mineral for healthy skin). Goats milk melt and pour soap is also really good for dry skin, since it’s higher in fatty acids and can help increase the skin’s moisture.

raw organic honey

Raw organic honey is such a great natural ingredient to use in your natural skin care routine. In this recipe, the raw honey adds a light layer of moisture to the clay face wash and also helps to evenly distribute the clay in the goats milk melt and pour soap.

You could also use sweet almond oil or jojoba oil, as they are both great in homemade soaps and are so nourishing for your skin.

essential oils

Essential oils are a great way to enhance your skin based on your skin type. My essential oil recommendations based on your skin type are below the recipe. Personally, I really enjoy using either lavender, peppermint, orange, or frankincense essential oils in this bentonite clay soap recipe.

making a bentonite clay face wash

When making a face wash with goats milk melt and pour soap (or any melt and pour soap base), you are going to need to work quickly once it’s melted. I highly recommend getting out all of your supplies and ingredients in the recipe first.

step one :

Chop up 1 pound of your goats milk melt and pour soap base into similar size pieces, about 1-2 inches in size. This will make it easier to melt and stir the soap.

step two :

Place the pieces of melt and pour soap into a double boiler on your stovetop. Heat the water to a gentle boil, while using the wooden spoon to stir the soap pieces after they start to melt.

If you don’t have a double boiler, then you can do what I did and use a large saucepan with water halfway up the side while placing a 4 cup glass measuring cup inside. The measuring cup works well and makes pouring into the molds much easier.

step three :

While the soap is melting, in a small glass bowl, add 5 teaspoons of bentonite clay and 5 teaspoons of raw organic honey. Mix until it forms a thick paste. Making a paste helps to evenly distribute the clay and honey in your soap.

step four :

Continue stirring the soap until smooth and no pieces are left. Once that happens, remove the double boiler or glass measuring cup from the stovetop and dry off the bottom. They will be hot, so make sure to have towels and pot holders nearby. Turn off the stove.

step five :

Add the bentonite clay and raw honey paste to the melted soap base, making sure to stir very well. Next add the 80-100 drops of essential oils directly to the mixture and stir again. In my recipe, I used 35 drops lavender, 35 drops peppermint and 25 drops orange. More essential oil recommendations by skin type are below.

Then pour the clay soap into your soap molds. I find that this clay face wash recipe makes around 5 bars of soap, depending on the molds you use.

step six :

Leave the soap in the molds for several hours to overnight. The soap is usually ready after a few hours, but it’s best to leave overnight to be sure it has hardened all the way through. Peel the molds back slowly and gently, so the soap comes out clean and beautiful.

step seven :

If you aren’t going to use all of your bentonite clay soap right away, then you will need to wrap your soap so it stays in good condition for your future use.

Plastic wrap, coffee filers and parchment paper are great choices to wrap homemade soap. You can also use tissue paper, scrapbooking paper and wrapping paper!

essential oil recommendations by skin type

Dry skin is soothed and moisturized by essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, rose, roman chamomile, myrrh essential oils.

Sensitive skin needs gentle oils like lavender, frankincense, helichrysum, rose, jasmine and copaiba.

Oily skin may benefit from tea tree, geranium, cypress, juniper berry, lavender, grapefruit and ylang ylang essential oils.

Mature skin tends to like oils such as helichrysum, lavender, rose, frankincense, sandalwood and ylang ylang.

Depending on your skin type, you may mix and match different essential oils to find your unique blend. My other favorite essentials oils for skincare are peppermint, orange, rosemary, tangerine, bergamot, and lemon.

washing your face with clay

Washing your face with clay is easy using this diy clay face wash recipe. You wash your face the same as you would normally. First, wet your face with water. Then rub the clay soap bar in your hands and apply the lathering soap to your face. Gently rub all over your face, allowing the soap to foam. For a even deeper cleanse, you can use a facial cleansing brush with the face wash. Make sure to rinse well.

Lastly, pat your face dry with a towel and apply a light moisturizer or face serum right away. I like to use this bentonite clay soap in the shower and store it there for easy access using a bar soap saver.

can I use a bentonite clay face wash daily?

Absolutely, you can use a bentonite clay face wash daily! Since we are using a much smaller amount of clay in this diy face wash compared to a clay face mask, you are able to use it more often. The bentonite clay is amazing for detoxifying skin, deep pore cleansing, smoother skin, reducing fine lines and soothes acne prone skin. With all those benefits, you are going to want to use it everyday!

is clay better than charcoal face wash?

Not necessarily. Clay and charcoal are both great for skin due to their detoxifying, deep cleansing, evening skin tone and soothing acne properties. While both clay and charcoal both absorb toxins, one key difference is that bentonite clay also releases minerals such as magnesium, calcium and iron into the skin. The texture and feel is also going to be different between clay and charcoal.

Since both clay and charcoal are both great natural ingredients for the skin, I would recommend trying out one for a few weeks to a few months. Then go ahead and try out the other one for the same amount of time. Otherwise, you could just use them both in your everyday natural skin care routine.
