This easy recipe is going to make the best DIY lip gloss you have ever used! It’s a simple and natural recipe that can easily replace your store-bought lip gloss. This lip gloss can be made into a clear gloss or add a natural tint to make it the exact shade you want.
This easy DIY lip gloss is quickly going to be one that you make over and over for yourself and then because it makes a perfect gift for family and friends!
Natural Ingredients
Shea Butter
Shea butter is amazing in lip gloss recipes due to its moisturizing, healing, and nourishing properties. Not only is it rich in fatty acids and vitamins A and E, but shea butter also intensely hydrates the lips, leaving them soft, smooth, and healthy. Plus it absorbs well without leaving a greasy residue, making it ideal for lip gloss. It’s both natural and gentle making it suitable for all skin types.
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is naturally rich in vitamins A, and E plus has antioxidant properties while soothing and nourishing the skin. It also is great for removing dead skin cells and preventing chapped lips.
You can also use other carrier oils such as jojoba oil, castor oil, or fractionated coconut oil as a substitute for sweet almond oil in this recipe.
Beeswax
Beeswax acts as a natural thickening agent, helping to solidify the lip gloss and give it a smooth, consistent texture that is easy to apply. Beeswax also forms a protective layer on the lips, sealing in moisture and preventing dehydration, which is essential for maintaining soft, hydrated lips. This barrier protects the lips from the environment, which can cause chapping, skin irritation, and dry lips.
Natural Tint Powder
Mica powder comes in lots of different colors, from light, and natural to bold colors. It’s the best way to add pigment without any additional texture to the DIY lip gloss.
For natural color, you can choose from cocoa powder, beetroot powder, hibiscus powder, eyeshadow powder, or blush powder instead of mica powder. These may add a slight texture to the gloss.
Essential Oils (Optional)
Essential oils are a great way to add a little bit of natural flavor as well as skin-soothing properties to this natural lip gloss. There are so many different essential oils that soothe the skin, making them perfect to add to this recipe. Some of my favorite essential oils to use include peppermint oil, lavender oil, orange oil, lemon oil, grapefruit oil, and vanilla oil. Of course, you can use different essential oils depending on your preferences. Below are some great essential oils combinations to add different flavors to your own lip gloss!
Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
Supplies and Ingredients Needed:
- 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 1/2 teaspoon beeswax
- 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon natural tint powder (mica powder, natural powder, eyeshadow powder, or blush – Tinted Version)
- 8-10 drops of essential oils (optional)
- small funnel
- double boiler
- glass measuring cup
- spoon
- small glass bowls (optional)
- lip gloss tubes or squeeze tubes
Clear Lip Gloss Base
1. Measure out the 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil, 2 tablespoons of shea butter, and 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax and add them into a double boiler on your stovetop. For mine, I used a saucepan with water halfway and a 1-cup glass measuring cup to make pouring easier. Heat water to a gentle boil over medium heat, whisking or stiffing until they start to melt together.
2. Continue whisking the mixture until smooth and no pieces are left. Once that happens, remove the measuring cup from the stovetop and dry off the bottom. The measuring cup will be hot, so make sure to have towels and pot holders nearby. Turn off the stove.
3. Add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture (optional). My favorite flavor is vanilla peppermint (6 drops of vanilla and 6 drops of peppermint). Stir again. Allow to cool slightly but still pourable.
4. Pour the clear lip gloss into the mascara tube using a small funnel. You will want to leave some room at the top of the tube for the applicator and wand. Add the stopper. Put in the wand and tighten. You can also use a squeeze tube if you prefer. It’s best to put them in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes. Then your diy lip gloss is ready to use!
Tinted Lip Gloss Recipe
- After adding in your essential oils (step 3), then also add 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon of mica powder or natural tint powder for your desired color. Mix until evenly dispersed. Note: If you want to make different shades, then add 2 teaspoons of the base lip gloss base for each tube you want to make to a small bowl. Then add a pinch of the powder and mix. Repeat as needed to fill all lip gloss tube bottles.
This recipe makes 5 lip gloss tubes.

Storing Your Own Homemade Lip Gloss
Now that you have finished lip gloss, using it is simple and easy. For best results, you may need to shake the lip gloss mixture or use the lip gloss applicator to stir it before applying it each time. Start small when applying the gloss to your lips, since a little goes a long way!
This homemade lip gloss can be stored at room temperature in your makeup bag, but it’s best to keep it out of direct sunlight and high temperatures that will cause it to melt. While this recipe doesn’t contain any preservatives, it should last around 6 months. Of course, you might have used it all by then anyway since that’s what happens to me!
Have too many to use? These natural lip glosses make a great gift for family and friends! Perfect to add onto a gift card or pair along with another homemade recipe.
