Making a natural essential oil perfume roller is quick, and simple and only requires a few easy steps. Whether you are ditching the synthetic scents, enjoy making your natural products, or just want to make your perfume this is a great guide to take you along the way.
Plus, you will learn all about making your own scents and figure out which blends you enjoy together. Once you get started you aren’t going to want to stop making this recipe and others like it with your essential oils.
Basics of Making Your Own Perfume Roller
Making your perfume roller is incredibly easy. The first thing and hardest part is going to be deciding on your scent. You can choose to make your own unique scent, mimic one of your fragrance blends, or use one of the natural perfume recipes below! If you are new to making and blending scents, there are different essential oil perfume notes (scents) that you will want to choose from.
Once you have selected your essential oil blends for the perfume roller, then you can mix them in a roller bottle. Take a few sniffs of the perfume bottle and make sure you enjoy the scent you have created. For me when I made my natural essential oil perfume roller, I had to add a few more drops of essential oils to get the scent just right. So you can always start with only a few drops to test the ratio of oil.
Lastly, you will top the essential oils with a carrier oil. There are several to choose from (see list below for unscented and lightly scented options) that emulsify the essential oils with the carrier oil to make the perfume. You can choose from one or mix two or three carrier oils.
Different Types of Notes in Perfume
Top Notes
Similar to traditional perfumes, making your own essential oil perfume begins with top notes that provide the initial burst of fragrance. These pure essential oils are light, fresh, and uplifting, evaporating quickly to create an invigorating aroma. Common top notes include citrus oils such as lemon, bergamot, orange, and grapefruit, as well as herbal oils such as peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus. Incorporating top notes into your perfume blend adds brightness and vitality, capturing attention from the first sniff.
Middle Notes
Moving on to the heart of the fragrance, middle notes add depth and complexity to your perfume blend. These essential oils emerge once the top notes have dissipated, lingering on the skin to create a lasting impression. Floral essential oils like rose, jasmine, and cardamom often dominate this layer, along with spicy oils such as cinnamon and clove. Middle notes infuse your perfume with character and emotion, evoking a sense of warmth and intimacy.
Base Notes
Finally, base notes provide the foundation of your perfume blend, anchoring the fragrance and extending its longevity. These rich and earthy oils emerge gradually, revealing their full depth over time. Common base notes include woody oils like cedarwood and sandalwood, resinous oils such as frankincense and myrrh, and sensual oils like vanilla and patchouli. Incorporating base notes into your perfume adds richness and sophistication, ensuring that your scent lingers on the skin for hours on end.
Selecting Your Blend
Crafting a signature perfume blend with essential oils requires experimentation and creativity. A great starting point is to select a few essential oils from each note category, considering their aromas, strengths, and compatibility with one another. Then you can test different ratios and combinations until you find a blend that resonates with your personal style and preferences. Most natural perfume recipes use somewhere between three and five essential oils, so you may need to narrow down the your list. Or just make two or three perfume roller bottles if you really can’t decide!
Keep in mind that less is often more when it comes to making your own essential oil blend. The best way to try is to start with small amounts and adjust accordingly.
Natural Ingredients
Essential Oils
Essential oils are a natural way to add wonderful scents to your natural essential oil perfume roller. The best part is that you can make your own signature scent or make a blend of your favorite scents. Of course, you’ll want to use the different scent notes as your guideline for which essential oil scents blend best. It’s also recommended to use high quality essential oils so you have the best scents for your perfume.
Carrier Oils
There are several carrier oils to choose from when making your homemade perfume. A carrier oil is used to dilute the essential oils and help blend them into your skin. There are several carrier oils to choose from when looking to make a diy perfume.
There are several unscented carrier oils including jojoba oil, olive oil, sesame oil, sunflower, and fractionated coconut oil. Lightly scented carrier oils include sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, tamanu oil, rosehip oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. You can use one carrier oil or several in your perfume roller. My preference is to use jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and fractionated coconut oil when making a natural essential oil perfume roller.

Using & Storing Your Perfume Roller
It’s best to wait a few days to allow the essential oils to mix with the carrier oils. The good news is that you absolutely don’t have to wait. Of course, you can go ahead and start using your homemade perfume right away.
Using the perfume roller is simple. Swipe the roller anywhere you would like the perfume scent. Common places are wrists, pulse points, neck, behind ears, etc. The scent tends to last several hours. You can re-apply as needed to make the scent last even longer.
Storing your natural perfume roller in a dark place, as well as one that is cool is recommended. This is to ensure the essential oils don’t spoil or go rancid. However, if you are using an amber essential oil bottle you run a lower risk of this, and doesn’t require the bottle to be in the dark.
