Making a homemade dog perfume spray using essential oils couldn’t be easier! It helps our beloved dogs smell a little better, whether that be from normal pet odor, the wet dog smell or just wanting to freshen up your dog’s coat.
Why Make a Natural Perfume for Your Dog
There are several reasons for making your own natural perfume for your dog instead of buying one.
- Easy, Simple Ingredients: This recipe only uses 3 ingredients, and you can use them for several homemade recipes for natural dog care.
- Safe, Free of Harsh Chemicals: Lots of commercial products contain chemicals that aren’t good for your dog (or for you) including synthetic fragrances, parabens, and phthalates. These ingredients can cause skin irritation, itchy skin, and other skin conditions for your furry friend. They should also be avoided if your dog has sensitive skin.
- Inexpensive: Once you buy the ingredients, you are able to make the pet perfume over and over again for less than $1.
- Convenient: Of course, it’s easy and more convenient to make your own dog spray instead of going to the store or ordering online.
- Quick & Effective: This DIY dog perfume works great to take your smelly dog to a fresh and clean smell.
Natural Ingredients
Water
The best option is to use distilled water since all impurities are removed through distillation. If you’re going to use distilled water, I suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which I use most of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.

Alcohol
Clear, high-proof alcohol is ideal for this recipe. It is colorless, doesn’t have a strong scent, and works well to mix essential oils and water for a longer period of time. I would recommend using Vodka or Everclear when making your own odor spray. This is needed for actually emulsifying the ingredients.
If you don’t have clear alcohol, then you can also use witch hazel as a substitute.
Essential Oils
This homemade dog perfume needs essential oils to add a natural scent. They make a great choice when looking to add a light scent to a recipe while avoiding synthetic fragrances. In this recipe, we are using pure essential oil blends that are safe for dogs.
Safe Essential Oils for Your Dog
There are several essential oils that are safe for your dog, as well as make a great perfume spray. For the recipe, you can use one or a blend of these essential oils. Also, I typically avoid peppermint oil on dogs and use only high quality oils especially when using them on or around my dog.
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Orange Essential Oil
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Lime Essential Oil
- Grapefruit Essential Oil
- Lemongrass Essential Oil
- Chamomile Essential Oil
- Rosemary Essential Oil
- Vanilla Essential Oil
Homemade Dog Perfume Recipe
Making a homemade perfume for your dog is easy, and you may already have everything you need! This recipe is for a 2 oz. glass spray bottle, but you can double the recipe for a 4 oz. glass spray bottle too. You will need the following items:
- 2 oz. glass spray bottle
- 1 1/2 oz. distilled water
- 1/2 oz. clear alcohol
- 12-15 drops of essential oils
- small funnel (optional)
Before you get started, if you use boiled water as I do, you will want to boil it right away. You can boil it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. I typically will boil 2-4 ounces of water at a time, just in case something happens or I want to make another recipe!
Measure out 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol (vodka) and pour it into the small spray bottle using a small funnel if needed.
Lastly, add in your drops of essential oil to give your homemade dog spray a natural scent. For the 2oz size bottle, add between 12-15 drops of essential oils. For the 4oz size bottle, I would suggest between 20-30 drops of essential oils. You can start with a smaller amount of essential oils and add more if needed. I like using 5 drops of orange, 5 drops of lime, and 5 drops of lavender essential oil.
See the essential oil list above for recommendations to use in the recipe.
Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the dog spray, you will want to shake it before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.

How to Use Your Dog Perfume Spray
You can use this dog perfume spray directly on your dog or as an air freshener. Of course, you can use it on their bedding or furniture which is one of the main reasons I love these kinds of recipes.
To use your dog’s perfume spray, you will want to spray it directly to the pup’s coat making sure to avoid your dog’s face and sensitive areas. I like giving my dog a treat while giving her a quick spray down her back. If this is your first time using it on your dog’s skin, then it’s a good idea to test a small area to make sure there isn’t any skin irritation on your pet.

When using it on your dog’s bed, blankets, or spot on the couch you can spray any spot that needs freshening up. You can gently massage the spray into the item, or let it air dry. If needed, reapply until the stinky smell is gone.
Lastly, you can simply use this recipe as an air freshener. It’s great for those areas where our pet tends to hang out often and may have a strong smell of dog. A few sprays into the air will purify and clear the odors! You can use it daily or as needed.
