This homemade dog spray deodorizer with essential oils is a natural solution to pet odors of all kinds. From getting rid of that wet dog smell, to their bedding, furniture, air in your home or even just a smelly dog, this stinky dog spray will freshen everything up!
Plus, this recipe has simple ingredients you may already have in your home.
Natural Ingredients
Water: Using distilled water is the best option since all impurities are removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. However, the next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
Alcohol: Clear, high-proof alcohol is great for this recipe. Not only is it colorless, but it also doesn’t have a strong scent, and works well to mix essential oils and water for a longer period. The main reason for this ingredient is to emulsify the ingredients together, otherwise they would separate. I would recommend using Vodka or Everclear when making your own odor spray.
Baking Soda: Using baking soda is a great way to absorb odors and remove musty smells. Plus, it’s also gentle enough to use on your furry friend as well as their bedding and blankets.
Essential oils: They give this homemade dog deodorizing spray its light scent. Using essential oils is a great choice when looking to add scent to a recipe while avoiding artificial scents. In this recipe, we are using essential oil blends that will help neutralize and get rid of unpleasant odors.
DIY Dog Spray Deodorizer Recipe
Before making this recipe, gather all the supplies and ingredients needed.
- 2 oz. glass spray bottle
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 ounce of warm water
- 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol
- 12-15 drops of essential oils
- glass measuring cup
- small funnel
Before you start, if you use boiled water as I do, you will want to boil it immediately. You can boil it in a microwave glass measuring cup or water on your stovetop. I typically boil 2-4 ounces of water at a time to make sure there is enough water.
1. Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 1/2 oz. of warm water (distilled or boiled and cooled) in a glass measuring cup. Mix the baking soda until dissolved. Add to a small spray bottle.
2. Measure out 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol (vodka) and pour it into the glass spray bottle using a small funnel if needed.
3. Add in the 12-15 drops of essential oil to give your dog spray a natural scent. For the 2oz size bottle, add between 12-15 drops of essential oils. For the 4oz size bottle, I would suggest between 20-30 drops of essential oils.
Note: You can start with a smaller amount of essential oils and add more if needed. See the essential oil list above for recommendations to use and blends.
4. Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the DIY dog spray deodorizer, you will want to shake it before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.

How to Use Your DIY Dog Spray
Using natural sprays is so easy and a great way to freshen up your home and any lingering odors. A dog spray deodorizer can be used in three different ways, from spraying it on your pet to their items. I love using it on dog beds, furniture, crates, or kennels or as an air freshener.
1. On Your Pet’s Coat: To use your dog spray deodorizer on your smelly dogs, you will want to spray it directly on the dog’s coat making sure to avoid their eyes, mouth, and any sensitive skin areas. I like giving my dog a treat while giving her a quick spray down her back. Although this is free of harsh chemicals, It’s a good idea to test a small area to make sure there isn’t any skin irritation on your pet.
2. On Your Dog’s Items: When using it on your dog’s bed, blankets, or spot on the couch you can spray a light mist to any spot that needs freshening up. You can gently massage the spray into the item, or let it air dry. If needed, reapply until the stinky smell is gone. Depending on the item, you may want to do a spot test on your furniture to make sure the spray doesn’t stain the item.
3. Air Freshener: You can simply use this basic recipe as an air freshener. It’s great for those areas where our pet tends to hang out often and may have a strong smell of dog. A few sprays into the air will purify and clear the odors! You can use it daily or as needed.
