This is a simple homemade hair butter recipe that is going to make your hair feel and look amazing. Plus it’s going to leave your hair super hydrated. You are going to fall in love with this recipe and the results even more!
I can’t believe that this recipe hasn’t always been part of my hair routine.
Natural Ingredients
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a natural hair moisturizer. It’s a heavier oil that balances well with medium-weight oils like jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, argan oil, and avocado oil. In this recipe, we’re using jojoba oil but you can substitute any other the others. I always recommend using a high-quality, organic coconut oil, that can be slightly melted down to mix in with the other ingredients.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is one of my favorite carrier oils to use when making homemade products since it’s perfect for moisturizing the skin and hair. It’s full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and B that the hair and scalp need. Jojoba oil not only moisturizes, but it also can reduce flakes, and dryness to ensure you have a healthy scalp.
You can also use castor oil, sweet almond oil, argan oil, or avocado oil if you have those on hand instead of jojoba oil.

Shea Butter
Shea butter is the base ingredient of this recipe. It’s a natural moisturizer with a high concentration of fatty acids and vitamin A and vitamin E. These vitamins are what make it an antioxidant, which especially helps with all dry hair. What makes it great is that all hair types can use it and it’s especially moisturizing. Shea butter restores dull hair and encourages healthy hair growth. With this in mind, you are quickly going to become obsessed with this ingredient and add it to both your natural hair and skincare routines.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are a great addition to this homemade hair butter recipe. This is where you get to customize the recipe to your hair for exactly what you want. Certain essential oils are better for hair health including cedarwood, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, rosemary, roman chamomile, and ylang-ylang.
This is my go-to Homemade Hair Mask for Dry Scalp. It does wonders at soothing any scalp irritation, nourishing your hair, relieving any itchiness, and adding moisture back to the scalp!

DIY Natural Hair Butter Recipe
As with most DIY recipes, you are going to want to gather all of your supplies and ingredients right away. It makes the recipe go smoothly even if there is a little waiting time for this homemade natural hair butter.
STEP ONE: Measure out 1/4 cup unrefined shea butter and break it into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to melt and stir. Then add the shea butter, 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil, and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil into a double boiler on your stovetop.
For mine, I used a large saucepan with water halfway and a 2-cup glass measuring cup to make pouring easier. Heat water to a gentle boil, whisking until they start to melt together.
STEP TWO: Continue whisking the mixture until smooth and no pieces are left. Once that happens, remove the measuring cup from the stovetop and dry off the bottom. The measuring cup will be hot, so make sure to have towels and pot holders nearby. Turn off the stove.
STEP THREE: Pour mixture into a glass bowl. This allows the mixture to cool more quickly. Since shea butter tends to be a little grainy, I recommend putting the bowl into the fridge for 1 hour or freezer for 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can also leave the mixture to cool at room temperature.

STEP FOUR: Remove the mixture from the fridge or freezer. If you put it in the freezer it may need to thaw slightly. This may vary based on your home temperature, but we are looking for the mixture to be solid but not frozen.
STEP FIVE: Using a hand mixer or immersion blender, beat the mixture for 1 minute until nice and smooth. Then add the 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oils to the whipped butter mixture.
* My personal recipe uses 10 drops of lavender, 10 drops of peppermint, and 10 drops of rosemary essential oil. See above for more essential oils that are great for all types of hair.

This DIY hair butter has a creamy texture. You can add a little more jojoba oil if you like your hair butter a little more silky and light feeling. I would recommend adding 1 teaspoon at a time so as to not make it too loose.
STEP SIX: Finally, the last step is to store your finished DIY hair butter in a small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.

How to Use Hair Butter
To use your homemade hair butter, apply it to damp hair or dry hair. A little goes a long way, so start by using a small amount and apply starting at the top of the head down to the ends of hair. I tend to use more hair butter at the bottom of my hair as the older and more mature hair tends to need extra moisture, especially if you have split ends.
Using this hair butter recipe is a great way to condition hair naturally. It’s recommended to use it on a regular basis to see results. That could mean using it daily or weekly, depending on your hair. Also, hair butter is similar to a leave-in conditioner, so there is no need to shampoo after using it. It may take 5-10 minutes to fully absorb into your hair shafts and then you can style your hair as normal.
