A natural lavender lotion is safe for babies and makes a great choice with its calming scent. Babies of all ages enjoy lavender lotion as it can help soothe fussy babies as well as be extremely gentle on their sensitive skin.
When looking for a lavender lotion for your little one, make sure to look for one free of synthetic fragrance and artificial fragrance. Often times this means looking at the ingredients on the back of the bottle or using the EWG’s skin deep cosmetics database. Of course, I prefer making my own skin care products since then I can control the ingredients and avoid harsh chemicals. This homemade lavender lotion is great to have on hand for little ones but is also a lotion that can be used by the whole family.
Natural Ingredients in Natural Lavender Lotion
Shea butter is a natural moisturizer with a high concentration of fatty acids and vitamin A and vitamin E. What makes it great is that all skin types can use it, incredibly moisturizing. Shea butter restores dry skin quickly once applied while not being greasy or oily.

Jojoba oil since it’s perfect for moisturizing the skin, making it a great addition to the recipe. Plus jojoba oil is full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and B that the skin needs.

Homemade Lavender Lotion Recipe
Let’s get to making this body lotion recipe, which is gentle enough for those with sensitive skin. This is a fairly easy recipe but requires a little prep time to get out all ingredients to make sure the recipe goes smoothly.
STEP ONE: Measure out a combination of shea butter (2 tablespoons), 1/4 cup of jojoba oil, 1/4 cup of coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon of beeswax (optional) into a double boiler on your stovetop.
For mine, I used a large saucepan with water halfway and a 1-cup glass measuring cup to make pouring easier. Heat water to a gentle boil, whisking until they start to melt together. You also have the option of using your microwave to melt the ingredients. When using the microwave, heat for 30-second increments until melted, making sure to stir the mixture in between.
STEP TWO: Continue whisking the mixture until smooth and no pieces are left. Once that happens, remove the measuring cup from the stovetop and dry off the bottom. The measuring cup will be hot, so make sure to have towels and pot holders nearby. Turn off the stove.
STEP THREE: Pour mixture into a glass bowl. This allows the mixture to cool more quickly. Let sit for 5 minutes before moving to the next step.
STEP FOUR: Then add 20-25 drops of lavender oil to the mixture (which is a 1% dilution). Stir again to combine well and allow to cool completely. If you are concerned about a strong lavender scent, then you can start by using a smaller amount and then add more if needed.
STEP FIVE: Finally, store your finished lavender lotion in a small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and store it out of reach of young children.

Using Lavender Lotion on Babies and Young Children
It’s a good idea to apply the natural lavender lotion after your baby’s bath. This will lock in hydration from the warm water from the bath, as well as start the calming vibes at the top of your bedtime routine.
You can apply a small amount of the body lotion all over, or use it as needed to certain areas such as knees, legs, arms, and elbows. If your baby has a skin irritation or dry skin, then make sure to apply on the affected area 1-3 times per day. This lotion is very moisturizing, so it can be used once a week up to daily for extra care.
Please note, this lotion should only be used for external use. If you are concerned about using the lotion on your baby, then you can always do a small patch test to check for an adverse reaction before applying it all over.
Lavender Essential Oil – Natural Remedy Uses
Lavender essential oil is known as the swiss army knife of oils for a good reason. It’s great for so many natural remedies from skin care, bug bites, and burns to be the one you grab for calming, soothing, and relaxing feelings. It’s one of the essential oils that I make sure to always have on hand. Here are some other ways to use lavender in your everyday life.
- Skin Condition and Skin Irritation: Great for acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring, and stretch marks.
- Insect Bites: Mosquitoes & bee stings, see my Bug Bite Roller Recipe in this blog post.
- Calming a fussy baby: Apply lotion to yourself or your baby, and use a diffuser in the room with a calming diffuser blend.
- Gentle massage: Add several drops of essential oil along with a carrier oil.
- Better Sleep: Use a lotion or diffuser blend, or make a room spray to use before bedtime. Spray your kid’s pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals, or just in their room 10-15 minutes before bedtime.
- Burns: Add 1 drop of lavender essential oil to 5-8 drops of carrier oil to soothe burns and sunburns.
- Rashes: Use lavender lotion on rashes to soothe and calm the skin.
- Dry scalp: Add 1 drop of lavender essential oil to 5-8 drops of carrier oil and rub into dry spots on the scalp. Reapply daily or weekly as needed.
When using essential oils when babies and young children, avoid using undiluted oils directly on their skin. Instead, always make sure to mix the essential oils with carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, or avocado oil.
