Now for those who aren’t sure about making your lip gloss. Yes, it really is easy and takes less than 10 minutes to make. If you can pour, melt, and stir simple ingredients, then you can absolutely make your own lip gloss. The only thing that might take you a while is picking the lip gloss color you want to make!
Natural Ingredients
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is naturally rich in vitamins A, and E plus has antioxidant properties while soothing and nourishing the skin. It also is great for removing dead skin cells and preventing chapped lips.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is amazing for moisturizing the skin, making it a great addition to this DIY lip gloss recipe. Plus jojoba oil is full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and B that the skin needs. It also creates a protective barrier over your lips, which may be especially helpful for dry or chapped lips.
A good substitute for sweet almond oil and jojoba oil includes fractionated coconut oil, avocado oil, and castor oil.

Mango Butter
Mango butter is a great moisturizer with a high concentration of essential fatty acids and vitamin A and vitamin E, similar to unrefined shea butter. It’s known to be great for dry lips and dry skin, as well as for people with skin irritation and sensitive skin. This is going to naturally thicken the lip gloss without using wax while keeping your lips soft and velvety.

Natural Tint Powder
Mica powder comes in lots of different colors, from light, and natural to bold colors. It’s the best way to add pigment without any additional texture to the lip gloss.
For a natural tint, you can choose from cocoa powder, beetroot powder, hibiscus powder, eyeshadow powder, or blush powder instead of mica powder. These may add a slight texture to the gloss.
Essential Oils
Essential oils really add a boost of flavor and skin-soothing properties to this natural lip gloss recipe. Many essential oils soothe and enhance the skin. Some of my favorite essential oils to use include peppermint oil, lavender oil, orange oil, lemon oil, grapefruit oil, and vanilla oil. Of course, you can use different essential oils depending on your preferences. See below for essential oil combinations to try.
Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
Supplies and Ingredients Needed:
- 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoon mango butter
- 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon natural tint powder (mica powder, natural powder, eyeshadow powder, or blush – Tinted Version)
- 8-10 drops of essential oils (optional)
- small funnel
- double boiler
- glass measuring cup
- spoon
- small glass bowls (optional)
- lip gloss tubes
Clear Lip Gloss Base Recipe
- Measure out the 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil, 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil, and 1 1/2 tablespoons of mango butter and add them into a double boiler on your stovetop. For mine, I used a saucepan with water halfway and a 1-cup glass measuring cup to make pouring easier. Heat water to a gentle boil over medium heat, whisking or stiffing until they start to melt together.
- Continue whisking the mixture until smooth and no pieces are left. Once that happens, remove the measuring cup from the stovetop and dry off the bottom. The measuring cup will be hot, so make sure to have towels and pot holders nearby. Turn off the stove.
- Add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture (optional). Stir again.
- Pour the clear lip gloss into the mascara tube using a small funnel. You will want to leave some room at the top of the tube for the applicator and wand. Add the stopper. Put in the wand and tighten. It’s best to put them in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes. Then your lip gloss is ready to use!

Tinted Natural Lip Gloss Recipe
- Add the 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture (optional). Stir again.
- Add 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon of mica powder or natural tint powder. Mix until evenly dispersed. Note: If you want to make different shades, then add 2 teaspoons of the base lip gloss base for each tube you want to make to a small bowl. Then add a pinch of the powder and mix. Repeat as needed to fill all lip gloss tube bottles.
- Pour the lip glosses into the lip gloss tubes using a small funnel. You will want to leave some room at the top of the tube for the applicator and wand. Add the stopper. Put in the wand and tighten. It’s best to put them in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes. Then your lip gloss is ready to use!

This recipe makes 5 lip gloss tubes. Of course, you can use any remaining for a lip balm if you add additional mango butter, beeswax, or candelilla wax to thicken.

Storing Your Natural Lip Gloss
Now that you have made your own natural lip glass, using it is simple and easy. For best results, you may need to mix the lip gloss with the applicator before applying it each time. Also, a little really does go a long way so make sure to apply a little a time to your lips.
This homemade lip gloss can be stored at room temperature in your makeup bag. While this recipe doesn’t contain any preservatives, it should last around 6 months. Of course, you might have used it all by then anyway since that’s what happens to me!
Have too many to use? These natural lip glosses make a great gift for family and friends! Perfect to add onto a gift card or pair along with another homemade recipe.

Just wondering. Won’t the lip gloss solidify since the mango butter is not an oil? How does it stay liquid?
-
For this lip gloss recipe, the mango butter acts to thicken the lip gloss. It does not solidify the gloss due to the ratio of the oils to butter.
