Making a DIY toilet paper spray is such an easy alternative to buying flushable wet wipes. Not only is it a great recipe to make, but it’s also incredibly refreshing. This wet wipe alternative is going to change how you feel about store-bought versions.
why make a wet wipe alternative?
Making your own wet wipe is a simple solution to some common issues with using flushable wet wipes. Often the wipes you buy in the store contain harsh chemicals such as synthetic fragrances. Also, packs of wet wipes are not the cheapest option available especially when you compare it to making your own spray.
Plus, flushable wet wipes have been known to cause havoc on a plumbing system. Since the wipes don’t break down quickly, they can cause issues for septic tanks. As a parent of two young children, this is not something that I want to deal with on top of everything else we have going on.
The easy solution is to make your own toilet paper spray, using these simple ingredients! This can be stored in your bathrooms at home or even a guest bathroom for when you have company over. Personally, I also like bringing it with us when we are out and about in case we need to use a public bathroom as well.
natural ingredients
water
The best option is to use distilled water since it has all impurities removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
aloe vera gel
Aloe vera gel is soothing, refreshing, and gentle enough for even the tenderness of the skin. While being known to moisturize and soothe sunburns, it can also be used in DIY skincare products since it has so many benefits for the skin.
fractionated coconut oil
Fractionated coconut oil is a liquid version of coconut oil. In this liquid state, the coconut oil no longer has a distinct smell and will not solidify. It’s one of those simple ingredients that I tend to always have on hand, so you can easily add a little to any homemade recipe.
castile soap
Castile soap is such a great emulsifier, which is why it’s in many recipes with essential oils and water. This means it’s the ingredient that helps bind everything together. Without it, the carrier oil wouldn’t mix with the essential oils and it just wouldn’t work. One of the best parts about using castile soap is that you only need a small amount because it’s very concentrated. Also, I personally like using the unscented castile soap so that I get to pick the scent.
essential oils
Pure essential oils are a great way to add a light scent while helping to soothe any sensitive skin. Adding a few drops of lavender essential oil or tea tree oil are a great option for this delicate area. When selecting your blend, keep in mind which family members will be using this DIY toilet paper spray. If children will be using the spray, then I would only lavender essential oil when making this recipe.
supplies and ingredients to make the best toilet paper spray
Making your own DIY toilet spray is simple, quick, and easy. Gather all of your ingredients and supplies right away. This recipe uses a 2 oz bottle. It’s a great size to toss in your backpack, or purse, or to leave right on the toilet bowl. Feel free to double or triple the recipe if you have a larger bottle.

- 1/2 tablespoon of aloe vera gel
- 1/4 teaspoon of castile soap

If you are using boiled water, then you will want to do that first so it can start to cool right away. You can boil your 2 ounces of water on the stovetop or microwave the water in a glass measuring cup. I usually boil about twice as much (or more) water than I need, just in case something happens or I decide to make something else with it! In order for the boiled water cool faster, place it in the fridge or freezer while measuring out the other ingredients.
First, measure out 1/2 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil and 1/2 tablespoon of aloe vera gel and add to the glass bowl. Add 1 1/2 oz. of distilled water or boiled and cooled water to the glass bowl and mix.
Then, add 1/4 teaspoon of castile soap to the bowl and mix again. The mixture should go from water and oil separated to a white emulsified mixture.
Next, pour 5 drops of lavender essential oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil into the mixture. Stir. If children will be using the spray, then I would use 10 drops of lavender essential oil instead.
Then put the small funnel on the glass spray bottle. Pour the diy toilet paper spray into the funnel, pausing if the mixture needs a few seconds to go into the spray bottle. You may also need to slightly lift the funnel, depending on the neck of your glass bottle.
Last, add the spray top to your glass spray bottle and this toilet spray is ready to use!
