Making a DIY Bentonite clay detox bath is a simple and easy way to cleanse your body naturally. The best part is how it’s going to make you feel after taking this detox bath, which is amazing! And who doesn’t love a good excuse to take a relaxing bath?
Benefits of Taking a Bentonite Clay Bath
There are several potential benefits of using bentonite clay in your detox bath.
- Bentonite clay is an excellent binder, helping to remove the body of toxins
- Helps improve common skin issues such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis
- Absorbs dirt, impurities, and toxins from the skin (including excess oil for acne-prone or oily skin)
- Helps to remove heavy metals, viruses, and bacteria from the body
- Calming, relaxing and helps with stress relief
Natural Ingredients
Bentonite clay is made of volcanic ash and is one of the base ingredients for good reason. It is known to help remove harmful toxins, making it essential in this recipe. Using bentonite clay is not only great for detoxing your body, but it’s also an easy way to take care of your skin (especially if you have any skin conditions). When combined with bath salts, the benefits only increase.
Epsom salts really make for a good detox bath. They are loaded with magnesium sulfate, which can help ease sore muscles, reduce stress, soothe skin irritation, and create a calming effect for better sleep. When buying epsom salts, always make sure to buy them unscented! This way your foot soak is not full of synthetic fragrances and you can add your own pure essential oils to give them an amazing scent.

Dead Sea Salts are exactly what they sound like – flakes of salt from the Dead Sea. One of the reasons to combine different types of salts is because of their unique characteristics and different ingredients. Salts from the Dead Sea have 21 minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, iodine, sodium, zinc, and potassium, making them mineral-rich salts. These are all amazing for skin, detoxification, and overall wellness. Adding some dead sea bath flakes to the recipe is a great way to make the perfect detox bath!
You can also use pink himalayan salt instead of dea sea salts if you have those on hand. They are filled with over 80 trace minerals that the body needs, while also helping with the body’s detoxification process.
Essential oils add an amazing scent to any natural bath care recipe! The possibilities are truly unlimited when it comes to which essential oils to use for your own epsom salt bath and detox bath recipes. Some of my favorite essential oils and essential oil blends are included throughout this blog post so you can choose the one(s) you enjoy!
Bentonite Clay Detox Bath Recipe
This recipe makes enough for 1 detox bath. You can easily double or triple the recipe if you want to have more on hand, storing the extra in a glass mason jar for later.
- 1/4 cup epsom salts
- 1/4 cup dead sea salt
- 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay
- 10 – 20 drops of essential oils (see below for blends)
- glass bowl
- spoon

STEP ONE: Add 1/4 cup of epsom salts and 1/4 cup of dead sea salts to a glass bowl and mix.
STEP TWO: Second, add 10-20 drops of essential oils. Mix the salts and essential oils with a spoon to combine well.
See different essential oil blends after the recipe. Also please note, if you are making this recipe for kids I would recommend using half the amount of essential oils (5-10 drops) as well as halving the ingredients.
STEP THREE: Measure 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay and add to the salt and essential oil mixture. Mix well.
STEP FOUR: Lastly, spoon the clay detox salts into a glass mason jar to store for later use or use right away. I always try to avoid using plastic containers when using essential oils, as the oils are so concentrated they can break down most plastics. Also, it is best to store them at room temperature or cooler.

How to Use Clay for a Detox Bath
To make a detoxifying bath, add 1/2 cup of clay detox salts to hot water (or very warm water) in a bathtub, as cool water might not dissolve the salts. Stirring the epsom salts can help them to dissolve entirely in the water before entering the bath water. The warmer the water, the more you are going to sweat. This means even more detoxing benefits!
This recipe can be used for a foot soak in a bathtub (in shallow water) or using a smaller tub, container, or foot spa. If using the recipe for a foot soak with less water, then use only 1/4 cup of clay detox salts instead of the full amount.
However you use them, it is recommended to soak for at least 15 minutes to gain the benefits, but you can keep soaking for 20-40 minutes. This recipe can be used as part of a one to two-week detox process. Or use it in place of a regular bath after a long day.
The best thing is getting out of the bath and truly feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. It is amazing what a little alone time and soaking in the tub will do for you! Apply a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil, body lotion, or lotion bar after drying off from the warm bath. Also, make sure to drink a glass of water or hydrating liquid afterward.
Dry Brushing
If you want to take detoxing to the next level, then I would highly recommend dry brushing before getting into your hot bath. It’s a great natural way to remove dead skin cells, support the lymphatic system (naturally flush toxins), reduce cellulite, and some even experience a natural energy boost.
There are lots of great videos showing you different dry brushing techniques, but I typically use the brush toward your heart-method. This is my favorite dry brush from Amazon.
