This bentonite clay face mask was created specifically for acne-prone skin and those looking to repair acne scars. Not only does it come together quickly, but it also uses only 4 high-quality ingredients that all help with acne, acne marks, and acne scarring!
How Does Bentonite Clay Repair Your Acne Scars?
Bentonite clay can help reduce the appearance of acne scars as it helps to remove toxins from the skin. It removes and reduces toxins in the skin, then allows the skin to both heal and reduce any leftover inflammation. The bentonite clay may also help to lighten the skin, which works on any redness from acne and dark spots.
It also is great for oily and acne-prone skin. Using bentonite clay on a regular basis tends to reduce oily skin and lessen the amount of acne. Basically, using a clay face mask can both help with your past acne and reduce your future acne. I’d call that a win-win!
Natural Ingredients in Face Mask
Bentonite clay is the base of the face mask and gives us that deep pore cleanse, soothes and reduces breakouts, removes toxins, and lightens acne scars, all while leaving your skin’s surface smooth, relaxed, and reinvigorated. It is also known as an excellent exfoliant, reducing fine lines, and evening skin tone. Basically, using bentonite clay can be one of the best ways to take care of your skin whether you have skin problems or not!
Rosehip seed oil has a subtle aroma and is amazing for keeping acne away as well as helping with scarring. It contains the nutrients linoleic acid, and vitamin A, which help with sebum production (reducing the excess oil production that causes oily skin). Rosehip oil also has vitamin C which has anti-inflammatory properties, boosts collagen, and most importantly counteracts hyperpigmentation to reduce the appearance of scars.
Witch Hazel is a natural cleaner that helps to control the skin’s oil production. It also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties making it a great choice for natural skin care. Witch hazel can also be used for acne care, as it dries out blemishes without leaving the skin dry. Plus, it can also help refine your skin pores!
Alternatively, you can also use apple cider vinegar and sweet almond oil in your DIY face mask, as both as also great for acne prevention. You can find these ingredients in my Sweet Almond Bentonite Clay Face Mask Recipe here! Of course, you can just use a little water as well.
Essential oils are a great way to enhance your skin based on your skin type. Several essential oil recommendations based on your skin type are below the recipe. My go-to’s for my sensitive skin are lavender, orange, and peppermint for that balance between calming, bright, and tingly!

First, measure out 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay and place it in a glass or ceramic bowl.
Add 1/2 – 1 tablespoon of unscented witch hazel to the mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon to combine.
Note: It’s best to use a wooden spoon as if the clay comes in contact with metal it can change the clay’s properties.

Dry skin is soothed and moisturized by essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, rose, roman chamomile, and myrrh essential oils.
Sensitive skin needs gentle oils like lavender, frankincense, helichrysum, rose, jasmine, and copaiba.
Oily skin may benefit from tea tree, geranium, cypress, juniper berry, lavender, grapefruit, and ylang-ylang essential oils.
Mature skin tends to like oils such as helichrysum, lavender, rose, frankincense sandalwood, and ylang-ylang.
Depending on your skin type, you may mix and match different essential oils to find your unique blend.
Other essential oils that are refreshing for the skin are peppermint, orange, rosemary, tangerine, bergamot, and lemon. Shop any .
Please keep in mind that citrus oils may cause photosensitivity when out in the sun. If using, I recommend applying the clay facial mask at night or when you are out of the sun.
8 Best Practices for Using Your Homemade Clay Face Mask
- After making your homemade face mask, you will want to apply it to a clean, dry face. Spread the face mask evenly all over your face in a 1/8″ to 1/4″ inch thin layer. This will ensure the clay face mask dries at roughly the same amount of time in different spots on your face.
- If this is the first time using a bentonite clay face mask or if you have sensitive skin, then leave the face mask on for 5 to 10 minutes. If you have used a bentonite clay face mask before or have a normal skin type, then you can leave the face mask on for 10-20 minutes maximum.
- The clay face mask may cause redness on the skin, so it is better to start with less time when first starting out. Any redness of the skin you experience will go away on its own. Typically for my sensitive skin, it goes away in around 30 minutes.
- You should take the face mask off if you experience any of these things. 1. The face mask has completely dried. 2. You start feeling a pulling or tingling sensation on your face. 3. Your face starts to feel warm. 4. The time limit has gone by.
- When you are ready to remove the bentonite clay face mask, simply wash the face mask off with warm water. Using a washcloth can also help to remove the face mask. Pat your face dry with a towel.
- Right after removing the clay face mask, you should apply a moisturizer to rehydrate your skin. Select a moisturizer with gentle, clean ingredients so you don’t disrupt your skin’s healing. My personal favorites are using sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or my homemade face serum.
- Plan to use this face mask 1-2 times per week for best results. Using this face mask too often may cause skin irritation, redness, tenderness, or dryness. However, consistent use is the only way for good things to happen to your skin.
- You can use the clay face mask for spot treatment for any cystic acne, acne patches, or other problem areas. Use the same directions as above, covering the small areas.
Alternative Types of Natural Clay
There are several different types of clay that you can use in your natural skincare recipes. My favorite is bentonite clay since it’s the type of clay that benefits the skin and is readily available and so easy to use! I like the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay that you can easily order from Amazon.
You can also use kaolin clay, french pink clay, and white clay in this recipe.
