Making your own DIY cream blush is super simple and the results are truly amazing. Instead of buying expensive cream blushes from the store, let’s walk through how easy it is to make your own homemade blush perfect for your skin tone.
Natural Ingredients
Shea butter
Shea butter is a natural moisturizer with a high concentration of fatty acids and vitamin A and vitamin E. These vitamins are what make it an antioxidant, which helps with premature aging and fine lines. What makes it really great is that all skin types can use it and it’s especially moisturizing. Shea butter is naturally solid when under 80 degrees, making it a great choice for making your own DIY cream blush.
Beeswax
Beeswax is the ingredient that hydrates, soothes, and calms your skin. It may also help with itchy skin or skin irritations as well as help repair damaged skin. Beeswax can also help serve as a protective barrier on the skin and help in thickening homemade recipes. When possible, I prefer using beeswax as a natural emulsifier compared to other emulsifying waxes made from vegetable or petroleum-based waxes.
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is perfect in this recipe for adding a bit of moisture to the skin. Jojoba oil is full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins E and B that the skin needs. I also enjoy using sweet almond oil and coconut oil in many of my natural recipes.
Natural Colorants
One of the things that is great about making your own blush is that you can customize the color. There are several natural colorants you can choose from, or mix and match to find the perfect shade for your cream blush.
- Beetroot powder is a common natural colorant in homemade recipes. This is going to be great for dark pinks, reds, and blending to make berry shades.
- Hibiscus powder is a beautiful medium pink shade, and also great for berry shades.
- Cocoa powder is going great for neutrals and golden tones, or added to make darker shades when mixing different colors.
- Eyeshadow powder can be used instead of other natural, food-based powders. The benefit of using this is that you already know the shade and just need to add enough to get the desired color.
Cream Blush Color by Skin Tone
When you go about selecting the color of your DIY blush, most of the time it just depends on your personal preference. If you need some help selecting the right color for your skin tone, then here are some color palette recommendations.
Fair skin: neutral, pink, light peach, or berry shades
Medium skin: peach, rosy pinks
Olive skin: peach, golden tones
Dark skin: coral, reds, deep berry shades
DIY Cream Blush Recipe
This DIY cream blush recipe comes together quickly, so I recommend getting everything ready before starting. Here are the supplies needed to make your own cream blush.
- 1 tablespoon shea butter
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1/2 teaspoon beeswax
- 1 teaspoon of beetroot powder (or other colorant of your choice)
- glass measuring cup or small glass bowl
- double boiler or saucepan
- whisk or wooden spoon
- small container
Step 1: Measure out 1 tablespoon of shea butter, 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil, and 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax into a small glass bowl.
Step 2: You can either use a double boiler or use a microwave to melt the mixture. When using the microwave, heat for 30-second increments until melted, making sure to stir the mixture in between.
Step 3: Once the mixture is melted, remove it from the double boiler or microwave and let cool for a few minutes. Then add 1 teaspoon of beetroot powder (or the natural colorant of your choice). Mix well. For my recipe, I added 3/4 teaspoon of beetroot powder and 1/4 teaspoon of eyeshadow powder.
If you are concerned about the homemade blush cream coming out too intense, then you can add in half the amount of colorant initially. Let the mixture cool slightly and test it on the back of your hand or on your cheek. Of course, if you like the color you’re all set! If not, then re-melt the mixture slightly in the microwave for 20 seconds and add in the remaining colorant, stirring well again.
Step 4: Pour the homemade blush into your empty container and allow it to cool completely before covering. Once cooled, it will also harden into a creamy texture.

How to store DIY cream blush
The best way to store your DIY cream blush is in a small, airtight container. I personally love reusing glass containers if have them, such as old lip balm or eye cream containers. Other options are these cosmetic glass jars or small mason jars from Amazon. I have also found some great finds at home goods over the years.
In addition, make sure to store your cream blush in a cool, dry location. The shea butter will remain solid up to 80 degrees, after that, it will start to melt.

Using your homemade cream blush
When using your homemade cream blush, dab a small amount on your cheekbone after applying any moisturizer, sunscreen, or foundation. You can use a makeup brush, a blending sponge, or your fingertips to blend it into your cheeks. A little can go a long way, so I always start off with less than I think I need. You can also add more if needed to get the look you like.
As a bonus, you can absolutely use the cream blush as a natural lip tint too! It has a smooth texture and it is a great way to add just enough color to lips.
