Let’s recreate your favorite scents with this anthro-inspired diy room spray recipe. It’s perfect for freshening up your living room, bedroom, bathroom, or anywhere in your home. Best of all, we are making a natural room spray two ways using the Capri Blue Volcano fresh scent for spring and the Anthro Autumn blend for the perfect fall vibes.
basics of making a diy room spray
Making a diy room spray is going to quickly become one of your favorite things to make at home. Room sprays only need a few simple ingredients and come together really easily. You will need water, essential oils, and an emulsifier that binds the essential oils with the water. Since water and essential oils don’t naturally mix, the emulsifier will help them stay together. The last thing you’ll need is a glass spray bottle, which you’ll be able to reuse over and over again.
natural ingredients
water
The best option is to use distilled water since it has all impurities removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
essential oils
Essential oils are what give this diy room spray its gorgeous scent. Using essential oils is a great choice when looking to add scent to a recipe while avoiding artificial scents. In this recipe, we are using northern lights black spruce, grapefruit, lemon, orange, and lime essential oils to give us that memorable Capri Blue Volcano essence of citrus and trees. The Anthro Autumn scent uses christmas spirit, clove, grapefruit, and bergamot essential oils for the perfect mix of everything fall with a splash of citrus.

alcohol
Clear, high-proof alcohol is ideal for this recipe. It is colorless, doesn’t have a strong scent, and works well to mix essential oils and water for a longer period of time. I would recommend using Vodka or Everclear when making room sprays.
making the anthro diy room spray
Let’s jump right into how to make a room spray that smells like the ones at Anthropology! This recipe is for a 2 oz. glass spray bottle, but you can double the recipe for a 4 oz. glass spray bottle too.
Before you get started, if you are going to use boiled water like I do, then you will want to boil it right away. You can boil it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. I typically will boil 2-6 ounces of water at a time, just in case something happens or I want to make another recipe! In order for the boiled water cool faster, place it in the fridge or freezer while getting the other ingredients and supplies ready.
Measure out 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol (vodka) and pour it into the glass spray bottle using a small funnel if needed.
Add 1 1/2 oz. of distilled water or boiled & cooled water to the glass spray bottle.

Lastly, add your essential oils to give your room spray that signature anthro scent. For the 2oz size bottle, add between 12-15 drops of essential oils. For the 4oz size bottle, I would suggest between 20-30 drops of essential oils. You can start with a smaller amount of essential oils and add more if needed. See the recipes below for the Capri Blue Volcano and Anthro Autumn blends and essential oils needed.
Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the natural room spray, you will want to shake it before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.
Lastly, you can add a simple twine or ribbon for a decorative touch to the room spray. You can also add a room spray label sticker to the bottle for a customized look. I love both the natural, farmhouse look as well as the crisp, freshness of the label.
The label definitely elevates this homemade recipe to make it look more like you bought it from the store. Make sure to check out these free printable labels that I made for the both Capri Blue Volcano and Anthro Autumn blends.

Can I use witch hazel in this diy room spray?
Yes, but it isn’t the best choice for making a diy room spray. Lots of room spray recipes include witch hazel as a way to mix essential oils and water. While it does work in the short term, the witch hazel doesn’t keep the combination of water and essential oils together for that long. If you are going to use witch hazel, then I would suggest you also add in a small amount of castile soap as well.
When making my room sprays, I like using a high proof clear alcohol like vodka. It seems to work best to combine the ingredients while not affecting the scent of the room spray.
Why make a natural room spray?
Room sprays are easy to make, save you money, and avoid the harmful ingredients in most room sprays you would buy from the store. Once you have all the supplies and ingredients, this recipe comes together in under 5 minutes! Plus, making your own natural room spray will cost about $3-4 to make the first time and around $1-2 to refill since you can reuse the glass spray bottle.
Most room sprays are made with synthetic fragrance, which is a known endocrine or hormone disruptor. Fragrances can cause respiratory issues in some people, especially those with respiratory or skin conditions like asthma, allergies, or eczema.

Using essential oils are great natural ingredients since they are derived from the plant itself. When buying essential oils, make sure you are buying 100% essential oils from a reputable company. There are lots of companies selling diluted essential oils or marketing something as an essential oil when it’s not. I have had a great experience with these in my home.
how long will my diy room spray last
A homemade room spray usually lasts around 3 months or so. The main reason for that is that there aren’t any preservatives in this recipe. Using distilled or boiled water will help your room spray last longer than if you used regular tap water. The good thing is that you will probably want to change out your diy room spray after around 3 months anyway, just in time for a new scent and a new season!
