This DIY sea salt spray recipe is great for acne-prone skin, oily skin, hormonal acne, and adult acne. There are several benefits of salt water on the skin, even for those of us who have other skin types who want even skin tone and anti-aging benefits. Sea water contains many beauty benefits and may quickly become your way to fantastic skin health.
Benefits of Sea Salt for the Skin
- Anti-inflammatory properties and anti-bacterial properties may benefit acne breakouts, oily skin, dull, rough, or dry skin condition, or other skin problems.
- Naturally detoxifies skin with the help of trace minerals. It helps the body clear out dirt and toxins by absorbing them.
- Exfoliates skin which helps to remove dead skin cells and allows healthy skin cells to form.
- Brightens and evens skin tone by stimulating deep under your skin cells and bringing out a natural glow.
- Fights premature aging due to its antioxidant properties that attack free radicals that cause wrinkles and fine lines.
Natural Ingredients
Pink Himalayan Salt
Pink himalayan salt is filled with over 80 trace minerals that the body needs. It is known the help with various skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, and all types of acne. Plus it’s great for soothing skin irritations, itchy skin, and balancing skin pH.
Alternatively, can also use sea salt or dead sea salt in this recipe if you have those on hand.
I also LOVE making my Homemade Pink Himalayan Salt Body Scrub to use as a natural exfoliator and moisturizer!
Water
The best option is to use distilled water since all impurities are removed through distillation. If you use distilled water, I suggest you buy this from the store. In place of distilled water, the next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which I use most of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel is soothing, refreshing, and gentle enough for even the tenderness of the skin. Since sea salt can cause a drying effect, aloe vera is perfect to balance out this recipe. Although aloe is known to moisturize and soothe sunburns, it can also be used in DIY skincare products since it has so many benefits for the skin. Make sure to look for an aloe vera gel that contains simple ingredients and is free of dyes.
Dried Lavender (Optional)
Adding dried lavender is a great way to add a light, calming scent to your sea salt spray. Plus, lavender is fantastic for the skin. It’s another simple way to nourish and bring back to life your acne-prone skin, oily skin, or any other skin issues you may have. Make sure to use a good-quality dried herb, especially since you are using this on your face.
How to Make a Sea Salt Spray
Making a homemade sea salt spray is simple and comes together pretty quickly! This recipe is for a 2 oz. glass spray bottle, but you can double the recipe for a 4 oz. glass spray bottle too. You will need the following items:
- 2 oz. glass spray bottle
- 2 oz. distilled water (or boiled water)
- 1 teaspoon pink himalayan salt
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
- 1 teaspoon dried lavender (optional)
- glass measuring cup
- spoon
- small stainer (optional)
- small funnel (optional)
Before you get started, if you plan to use boiled water as I do, you will want to boil it right away. You can boil it in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. I typically will boil 3-4 ounces of water at a time, just in case something happens or I want to make another recipe!
Add the 1 teaspoon of dried lavender to the glass measuring cup with the boiled water. Let the herbs steep for 5-10 minutes. Use a strainer to remove the dried herbs from the water. I like pouring it into another glass measuring cup to make pouring easy.
Then add 1 teaspoon of pink himalayan salt to the warm water. Mix the pink himalayan salt until dissolved.
Measure out 1 teaspoon of aloe vera and pour it into the sea salt water. Mix again and let the mixture cool on the counter or place it in the fridge for faster cooling.
Lastly, once the mixture of sea salt is cooled, then you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each and every single time you use the sea spray, you will want to shake it before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.

Using & Storing Your Salt Water Spray
Using your DIY sea salt spray is quite easy! It’s best to use it on freshly washed and dried or clean skin (free of any moisturizers, lotions, make-up, or sunscreen). Spray directly on your face and let dry before applying other products. Alternatively, you can also spray on a cotton pad like a facial toner, and then rub it in circular motions gently on the skin. Using a cotton pad really helps to exfoliate the skin as well.
This recipe is designed to incorporate into your natural skincare routine to restore your skin, have fewer breakouts, and clear skin. For best results, plan to use this daily after cleansing your face. More great DIY skincare recipes are below for a full skincare routine!
Of course, you can also use this sea salt facial spray on other affected areas of your body that have acne. Also if you are concerned about using sea salt on your body or have sensitive skin, then test it on a small patch and wait a few days before using it again.
Plan to store your DIY sea salt spray in a dry, cool area of the home. This spray can be stored for 3-4 months, as it doesn’t contain any preservatives. But you will probably have used it all by then anyway, I know I do!
